Stanley Dural, better known as Buckwheat Zydeco, won the Grammy Award for Best Cajun or Zydeco Album last night for his 2009 release “Lay Your Burden Down.”  This eleven-track CD includes his regular band and special guests Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews on trombone and Sonny Landreth on guitar (on two tracks).   Dural got his start in zydeco playing organ behind the great Clifton Chenier.  He has recorded for local labels Blues Unlimited (Crowley, LA-based), Maison de Soul, and national/international labels Island, Tomorrow, Rounder.  He even did a children’s CD, Choo Choo Boogaloo for Warner Brothers.   My favorite is Buckwheat’s zydeco party, with its state-of-the-art version of Zydeco boogaloo.   You can’t listen to it and keep still!   And they’re on tour, so go catch ’em where you can!  Congratulations, Buckwheat!

Although it’s not on Lay Your Burden Down, here’s an excellent performance of the song Jackpot from December 2009:
