new (book)

Cajun and zydeco music figures Buckwheat Zydeco, Marc Savoy, Boozoo Chavis, and Eddie Shuler are profiled in a book coming this October, Angola to Zydeco: Louisiana Lives by R. Reese Fuller from the University Press of Mississippi.  Haven’t seen it yet, since it’s forthcoming, but it looks like a promising title.  It’s available for pre-order from the usual suspects.

The new book House of Hits by Roger Wood and Andy Bradley is a history of the record company Gold Star/SugarHill, out of Houston, Texas.   Gold Star is where Harry Choates recorded the ‘Cajun national anthem,’ “Jole blon.”  A short article in the Houston Press describes the book.   There’s an image of the cover of Choates’ LP, too.  Could be good reading; Bradley was an engineer for the label.
