Jackie Caillier is an accordionist and band leader of the Cajun Cousins. Ivy Dugas is his bass player and does most of the singing for the band. This performance is introduced by Terry Huval, leader of the Jambalaya Cajun Band. It took place on the live program Rendezvous des Cajun, also broadcast on television in the area. The song is J’Etais Au Bal, written many ways, including J’ai etais au bal, J’ai été-z-au bal and J’ai été au bal. It means “I went to the ball,” and is about going to dance every night, dressed in a different color. It’s one of the classic Cajun songs. And it’s the name of a documentary on Cajun music by Les Blank, Chris Strachwitz and Maureen Gosling. Raymond Francois says he believe it is related to the songs Oh Susannah and Get Along Cindy. I don’t recognize the violinist and vocalist, and they don’t usually have a rubboard player. Look for them at the club La Poussiere (“the dust”) in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
