Yesterday’s New York Times carried an article about zydeco trail rides by Shaila Dewan.  It describes the Pineywoods Trail Ride in Beaver, LA.  And, yes, I had to look it up, too, after 40 years in Louisiana.  It’s northwest of Mamou.  These rides are an important part of Creole culture, and a remnant of rural, horse-based culture.  Yes, there really were and are Creole cowboys.   Note Geno Delafose’s album Le Cowboy Creole and Jeffrey Broussard’s band The Creole Cowboys.   There’s a sidebar on how to find a trail ride and where to eat and sleep in Lafayette:  Prejean’s and the Blue Moon.  Go on, you’ll love it!  Just don’t wear shorts and sandals.
