Way back in 1972, the Beatles’ Apple Records released a 45 version of Saturday night special recorded by Louisiana’s Lesa Cormier and the Sundown Playboys.  Their song made it to #154 on the UK pop charts.  The story of how this came about and what happened afterwards is told in the American Press Reporter’s Notebook story.  This recording was recently released on the CD Come and Get It: The Best of Apple Records.  There’s also a paragraph with the story in John Broven’s excellent book, South to Louisiana.  And here’s a recent version by a different band
